Help PS8 Win The Matching Contribution Challenge!
FEBRUARY 26 through
MARCH 26 2010
Double or triple your donations with our Matching Contribution Challenge
A generous PS8 parent has agreed to make a $20,000 donation to the PTA. However, there's a catch. So we need your help!
The $20,000 donation is a matching contribution challenge. This means it is contingent upon our raising $20,000 from PS8 families.

What a week! Snowballs on Wednesday,
8Ball on Thursday!
Photographs by Aki Tucci
The snow was piled up high after the storm of the season on Wednesday. Though it was frosty and black in the streets last Thursday night, the scene at Galapagos Art Center in Dumbo was spirited and warm with crowds gathered for the 8Ball. This nascent school event was designed a year ago to get people together in the neighborhood in the deep of the winter to mix and mingle in support of school enrichment. Prosecco was passed to intrepid guests upon stepping in the door. Ps8 parents Steve Heisler, Jennifer Kendall and Doug Bivano were at the bar. Beautiful finger food by Tazza and sushi by Iron Chef were savored and desserts, the delicious handiwork of local favorite Almondine and cookies by One Girl Cookie disappeared like magic.

A Midsummer in Midwinter Knock-Out
at PS8
By Michael Rock, PS8 Parent
Photographers by Nathalie Scheuller
Having not thought much about elementary school plays since I was in one about forty years ago, I only had vague memories of brightly lit cafeterias, flimsy scenery and missed cues. So when I heard that PS8 would be staging "A Mid-Summer Night's Dream" with third, fourth and fifth graders I must admit I was curious bordering on skeptical. In addition it was billed as a "Remix" which could suggest something terribly misguided: think: "Yo, Lysander, awesome saber."

PS8 Staff's Got Talent
(and a Sense of Humor too)
Photos by Aki Tuccu
and Nathalie Schueller
On a Thursday evening, January 14th, the amazing teachers and staff at PS8 initiated the first PS8 cabaret, "PS8 Staff's Got Talent (and a Sense of Humor too)". Assistant Principal Robert Mikos, Parent Coordinator Blake Amos, Virtual Y Director Mr. Brown, drama teacher Noelle Gentile, dance teacher Josette Slivinski, music teacher Ms. Martin, gym teacher William Maxcy along with teachers from every grade took the stage to entertain the packed auditorium.

Though originally organized to support the arts at the school, ultimately it was decided that the proceeds of over $2,000 should be donated to earthquake relief efforts in Haiti.

We invite you to
P.S.8's production of Shakespeare's
"A Midsummer Night's Dream"
Come and see P.S. 8's third, fourth and fifth grade students perform this whimsical favorite by Shakespeare.
Performances are:
Thursday, February 4th
and Friday, February 5th
at 6:00 pm in the P.S. 8 Auditorium, 37 Hicks Street (between Middagh & Poplar Streets), in Brooklyn.
The students of PS 8 have taken part in this production as performers, co-directors, scene, prop and costume designers, and public relations marketers.
In this romantic and hilarious love story, the young Hermia is in love with a boy named Lysander, but her father, King Oberon, does not want them to marry. Instead, he wants her to marry Demetrias - a boy who her friend Helena loves. As they travel into the woods, they run into even further mishaps and confusion at the hands of Puck, the ever mischievous sprite.
Want to get involved? Volunteers are needed to help transform the auditorium into a theatre. Help us construct sets and create props and costumes. Interested community members are invited to attend Volunteer Day on Saturday, January 23rd, 10 a.m. to 3:30 a.m.
